SONATA NO.3

2016

Gian acknowledges the limitations in music and painting. Although music is more emotionally contagious, the experience is short lived. Once the performance is complete, the music is lost, since music itself is intangible and transient. Paintings on the other hand are tangible and static, once completed it is frozen in time and can be experienced in perpetuity. However it lack the immediate psychological impact capable by music.

This painting is to explore the possibilities of breaking the limitations of music and paintings by experiencing them both in tandem. Gian is hoping to devise an audio and visual experience that achieves an emotional resonance with the audience that is far stronger than experiencing the painting and performance in isolation.

A pouring technique was used to create the painting. The forms are intended to be ambiguous, which encourages the audience to immerse themselves in contemplation and to feel. Specific to this painting, Gian has been listening to Sonata No.3 Ballade during the pouring process. She seeks to create a physical representation of the performance by translating her emotions onto the canvas, thus creating a painting that embodies the life and spirit of Sonata No.3.
